Office 2010 Professional x86 SP1 Installation Error

Yesterday I was setting up a couple of VM for a demo of BizTalk 2010 and SharePoint 2010 integration. Everything was going smoothly until I tried to install Office 2010 Professional x86 SP1 in the Windows 7 VM designed to act as a user computer in the solution. In the middle of the process the installation stopped and the following error entries were added to the Windows Application Log:

This was the first time I had such a problem with Office 2010 SP1 so I decided to take a good look at the installation log and found out the following error description:

Additional information is available in the log file C:\Users\ADMINI~1\AppData\Local\Temp\officesuitewwsp1-x-none_MSPLOG.LOG.

I tried to reinstall the SP1 with different switches and configurations and the same error still was interrupting the process. I even re-registered the Microsoft.SharePoint.BusinessData.Administration.Client in the GAC but the error kept showing up.

Finally I decided to look for similar errors in the always resourceful TechNet Forums and for my surprise I found the problem is related to a bug in the SP1 installation routine that blocks the proper completion of the process in certain cases when there is no readable CD/DVD loaded in the drive bay.

If you ever come across something like this just follow this workaround and the SP1 installation will be performed successfully.
