Incorrect Page Redirection in SharePoint 2007 Migrated Site

Last week I started to assist a colleague with a SharePoint 2003 to 2010 migration. For this project we decided to use a database migration over new hardware strategy because of the obsolescence of the current SharePoint 2003 servers.

There is no direct migration from SharePoint 2003 to 2010, you need to migrate to 2007 in between and from there to 2010. For this middle step we set up a Virtual Machine with SharePoint 2007 so it could be reset as needed in order to make corrections to the migration process before deploying it on the production environment.

Yesterday we performed the migration of the site content database to SharePoint 2007 and at first glance everything migrated ok. Aside from some unghosted pages previously reported by the prescan.exe tool that were reset to the site definition, all the information displayed flawlessly. Nevertheless there were a couple of sites that once accessed were redirected to inexistent urls:

As you can see the address bar referenced the UpgLandingPgRedir.aspx page. This page is used when you perform a gradual upgrade but for some reason the migration routine mistakenly set it up in the database upgrade process.

Now, How do you solve this? Actually is pretty simple:

1.  On any page where this error shows go to  Site Actions -> Site Settings -> Modify All Site Settings

2.  Then in administration, under Look and Feel -> Welcome Page

3.  Change the URL of the Welcome Page from UpgLandingPgRedir.aspx to default.aspx

I still can’t find out why the migration process wrongly updates the site welcome page to UpgLandingPgRedir.aspx. But in the meantime this process should be enough in case you end up facing a situation like this.
